Press release

As a result of numerous media consumers’ complaints and the public address of Amnesty International Moldova, the Press Council of the Republic of Moldova has taken knowledge of and will examine the case of the story showing aspects of a teacher’s private and intimate life, broadcast by the PRO TV Chişinău channel and by its website, www.protv.md.

The Press Council reminds journalists and media outlets about the ethical obligation to protect and promote human rights, including the right to private life and intimacy. The Moldovan Journalist Code of Ethics requires (in section 4) that journalists respect the intimacy of people and that they can cover the private behavior of a private person only if this behavior disturbs public order or violates the rights of other persons.

The Press Council requests that the Broadcasting Coordinating Council (BCC) examine the case of the “Lover’s revenge” story, broadcast in the PRO TV Chişinău newscast on 16 January 2015, in terms of its compliance with the legal requirements on protection of private life.
