Independent Journalism Centre (IJC) director Nadine Gogu said on Tuesday, at the international festival “Civic Fest 2013”, that journalists should cover more the culture-related issues in their materials. She talked about the relationship between media and culture during a panel organized on the first day of the festival.

Nadine Gogu said that politics prevails in issues covered by journalists as compared to other areas. “We should see how we can encourage journalists to write more about culture. If we take a newspaper and thumb through it, we will find very few materials related to this area. Before, in some editorships there were reporters who covered the cultural field. Now there are fewer. Why? They are focused more on politics”, IJC director explained. She proposed that the civil society creates partnerships to encourage journalists to cover more the cultural field.

The discussions were attended by Monica Babuc, Minister of Culture, and Ion Stefanita, director general of the Agency for Inspection and Restoration of Monuments (AIRM) of the Ministry of Culture. The first edition of “Civic Fest 2013: Moldova for Citizens” takes place within October 29-31 and is organized by the East Europe Foundation with the support of the Government of Sweden, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and the ERSTE Foundation from Austria.

Civic Fest brings together the most successful projects of civil society from both the European Union and the Republic of Moldova, which gained international recognition and can serve as models of best practices in various areas.
