Media NGOs are concerned with the growing number of incidents between demonstrators and representatives of the media.

Thus, according to some videos published by the TV channels that belong, or until recently used to belong, to politician Vlad Plahotniuc, a Publika TV film crew was assaulted on Sunday, June 11, 2017, at the protest in The Great National Assembly Square. When the journalists were shooting the event in the square, protesters against the change of the election system chanted “Shame!”, “Publika to trash!”, “Liars!”, and an old man hit the camera.

Media NGOs condemn such actions and remind that the Law on the Press allows media representatives, in the performance of their professional duties, to receive and disseminate information, make audio and video recordings and take photos. In its turn, the state guarantees protection of a journalist’s honor and dignity, health, life and property.

According to the Criminal Code, deliberate obstruction of activities of a media outlet or journalist, as well as intimidation of a media outlet or journalist for criticism, are considered socially dangerous acts and punished in accordance with the provisions of the Code.

We appeal to the organizers of protests to adhere to the national legislation on assembly and to not allow violation of journalists’ legitimate rights during protests.
