At a briefing today, 17 October, the Broadcasting Coordinating Council (BCC) announced about its intention to monitor broadcasting media outlets during the electoral campaign for the parliamentary elections of 30 November 2014.

In this context, BCC President Dinu Ciocan mentioned that the broadcasting regulator already approved 112 statements of broadcasters, of which 97 (53 televisions and 44 radios) expressed their intention to cover the electoral campaign and 15 (7 televisions and 8 radios) said they would not commit to it.

The broadcasters that took it upon themselves to cover the electoral campaign will have to complete a special form developed by the BCC with information divided into three sections: electoral advertising, electoral debates, and other types of programs that will provide airtime to electoral contestants. The form will have to be completed and sent to the BCC on a weekly basis.

At the briefing, the BCC president also mentioned that the broadcasting authority approved the decision to monitor, between 20 October and 30 November, the main newscasts of the following televisions: Moldova 1, Prime, Publika TV, Canal 3, Canal 2, N 4, TV 7, PRO TV CHIŞINĂU, Jurnal TV, Accent TV, Ren Moldova, RTR Moldova and Euro TV. During the same period, it will also monitor 25 radios in terms of compliance with the proportion of local music and the volume of electoral advertising.

Dinu Ciocan further underlined that by monitoring broadcasters, the BCC aims to ensure pluralism of opinions in informative and analytical programs and to guarantee electoral contestants’ access to broadcasting media. He appealed to journalists “to cover the electoral campaign correctly, impartially and objectively, so as to avoid jeopardizing the natural process of elections or misleading the public opinion, thus contributing to the conduct of free and democratic elections in our country.”
