False information is one of the tools that many politicians make use of in order to manipulate and influence public opinion. It happens especially during election campaigns, when they fight for people’s minds and votes. The influence of false news on election results was discussed in the “Media Azi” show by Nadine Gogu, Executive Director of the Independent Journalism Center, and her guests, sociologist Veronica Ates and communication expert Cristian Saulea.

Protagonists of the show tried to answer several questions regarding the impact of false news on citizens: To what extent can they influence people on election day? How many people of those who receive in their mailboxes all kinds of leaflets and newspapers with unverified or false information read them and take them as true, and how many realize they are being misinformed? Why does fake news on TV affect people’s critical thinking more than that published in print media?

The guests of the show also drew attention to the impact of manipulation and misinformation on public trust in the media. Veronica Ates found, based on sociologic surveys, that in this respect there had been a downward trend – from 63% in 2005 to 35% in 2016. According to Cristian Saulea, this decrease is closely related to what is happening in society.

The protagonists of the show are of the opinion that there should be tools for measuring the impact of false news, especially those broadcast during election campaigns, when they can influence citizens’ voting options. They recommend media consumers to seek information from several sources in order to avoid being manipulated.
