On Tuesday, July 25, the Independent Journalism Center presented the draft of the new Law on Advertising as part of its campaign to improve the legal framework in the field of advertising. The document was drafted between January and June 2017 by IJC’s experts after an IJC study conducted in 2016 to assess the national regulations on advertising revealed the urgent need for improvement.

The draft law was presented at a public debate that brought together the representatives of the Parliamentary Commission for Culture, Education, Research, Youth, Sport and Media, of the Ministry of Justice, of the Competition Council, of the Consumer Protection Agency, of the Broadcasting Coordinating Council and of the Association of Advertising Agencies, as well as journalists, managers and media experts.

Work on this draft law was dictated by the urgent need to improve regulations in this field in order to create a proper climate for the development of the advertising market, where the social responsibility of all the actors engaged in advertising would prevail.
The draft law offers a broad freedom of action to all actors in the field and motivates them to act responsibly. At the same time, the document removes the inaccuracies and ambiguities existing in the current legislation, supplementing it with new provisions on fair competition, outdoor advertising, advertising consumers’ rights, etc.
Participants in the debate were of the opinion that such a law is a new step in the adjustment of national legislation to the international language, standards and good practices in the field of advertising.

The draft law is available in Romanian on www.media-azi.md
