Media NGOs are expressing their concern about Moldovan broadcasters’ increasingly frequent notifications of cases when the national telecommunications operator “Moldtelecom” suspended broadcasting of some TV channels that aired videos from the protest of January 20, 2016 in front of the Parliament.

According to Jurnal TV, people from all over the country called its editorial office and sent messages about suspended broadcasting of Jurnal TV. At the same time, lots of messages appeared in the media and on social networks, notifying that “Moldtelecom” had blocked other TV channels that aired information about the events in front of the Parliament – TV7, Moldova 1, Canal 2, Canal 3, Pro TV Chisinau, Publika TV and Prime.

It is also alarming that the numerous citizens’ calls to client support and technical assistance services were not replied on Wednesday, January 20, in order to clarify the situation. In this context, the explanations posted on Thursday, January 21, on the company’s website by its administration, claiming that “Moldtelecom” had become “target to a cyber attack,” could not convince broadcasters and media consumers.

We shall mention that a similar situation was also notified by broadcasters and consumers in September 2015, when the broadcasting of some TV channels airing videos from another large-scale protest was suspended.

We condemn such incidents and qualify them as serious violations of citizens’ freedom to be informed and journalists’ right to spread information. We are asking the Broadcasting Coordinating Council to investigate the real reasons of why “Moldtelecom” suspended broadcasting on January 20 and to inform society about the measures taken.
