Mass media experts and representatives of media NGOs from the Eastern Partnership states met Monday, February 9, in Kiev (Ukraine) to sum up the outcomes of collaboration under the ENP East Media Freedom Watch Project, implemented by NGO Internews Ukraine and supported by the European Union, reports mediafreedomwatch.org.

At the international conference, the participants provided an overview of media freedom in all six ENP member countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, focusing on key developments, reforms, regional trends and challenges during the two years of project implementation (March 2013 – February 2015).

The agenda included reports and discussions about mass media in Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine in the light of closer relations with the European Union; protection of the journalists' rights and of the freedom of expression in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Belarus; information security in the Eastern Partnership countries in the light of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The participants shared best practices on protection of media freedom in the Eastern Partnership countries, learned about key challenges and threats to media freedom and protection of the rights of journalists, committed to jointly resolve issues of common interest.

The ENP East Media Freedom Watch Project reported on mass media developments in the six ENP countries, published news and quarterly press freedom reports that included the assessment of the press freedom indicators and subsequent ranking of the ENP states.

It should be reminded that Moldova kept its second position in the 6th Press Freedom Index ranking, following Georgia. Ukraine ranked the third, followed by Armenia, Azerbaijan and, ultimately, Belarus. The index is the sum of the scores of each ENP country for four chapters – Politics, Practice, Broadcasting, Internet and New Media.

The ENP East Media Freedom Watch Project was implemented by Internews-Ukraine, Yerevan Press-Club (Armenia), Yeni Nesil Journalists Union (Azerbaijan), Green Mile Association (Georgia), Independent Journalism Centre (Moldova), and partners from Belarus.
