Five months in detention, Khadija Ismayilova received the prestigious Freedom of Speech Award, meant to commemorate Anna Politkovskaya, from the NGO Reach All Women in War. The award was given to her for the courage to publish a number of investigative articles, reports contact.az

"Khadija Ismayilova has shown great courage in revealing top-level corruption in Azerbaijan. She investigated the presidential family's business ties with company Telia Sonera, thereby exposing herself to huge risk. The detention of the journalist is a violation of freedom of expression, a shameful action of those in power; thus, they aim at discouraging journalists from investigating government abuses", said the Chairman of the National Press Club in Sweden, Bjorn Hager.

Khadija Ismayilova has received several international awards, including the 100 Information Heroes Award.

It is worth reminding that Khadija Ismayilova, investigative journalist and correspondent of Radio Free Europe in Azerbaijan, was arrested on 5 December 2014 in Baku, for the alleged instigation of a coworker to committing suicide.
