On the 18th of August the news channel CNN revealed the Global Disinformation Index study results on the lucrative business of disinformation. The organization surveyed 20,000 domains suspected of sharing false information and examined their audience, advertisements and how much they earned for every visitor. At least 235 million USD have been raised due to ads on disinformation and extremist websites, according to the study. Advertisers are not informed that their brands end up on these websites. "I think given the choice they would actively choose not to subsidize this kind of content, but right now they don't have the choice," Danny Rogers, chief technology officer at the Global Disinformation Index, said. It is the responsibility of companies to monitor where their advertisements are published. Sleeping Giants, an activist group created after the 2016 elections, is advocating for the removal of ads from untrustworthy news outlets. "Advertisers for a long time viewed media as reach and frequency, and now they have to view it with responsibility, too. It's bad for society if they're funding this hate and disinformation," Sleeping Giants Founder Matt Rivitz said.
