The Ida B. Wells Society partnered with various news organizations this summer to offer student IBWS members paid internship opportunities this summer that offer training, mentorship and experience with some of the top investigative journalists in the country. These opportunities are open to IBWS members only (membership is free).

The Society is thrilled to announce the final remote investigative internship opportunity of summer 2021 with ProPublica targeted at students, recent graduates and postgraduates from underrepresented communities. You’ll work with our award-winning teams covering topics related to power and betrayals of public trust.

ProPublica will provide two interns with mentorship from ProPublica’s staff on investigative fundamentals as well as the opportunity to work on projects. All of our summer internships the being funded by the Ida B. Wells Society and interns will be provided with training workshops on the fundamentals of investigative and data reporting from veteran reporters around the country.

The engagement reporting intern will work with mentors on ProPublica’s engagement team to crowdsource stories for investigative projects. The intern will likely manage a callout, sift through incoming tips and lead an outreach campaign among other responsibilities. The second intern will work with mentors on ProPublica’s data team on high-impact investigative projects. The data intern will be involved in all facets of data journalism: requesting, collecting, creating and querying databases and finding the stories hidden within them.

This opportunity come in addition to the summer internships with the New York Times, the Miami Herald, USA Today and The Associated Press announced earlier this spring. The internship with The Associated Press will be accepting applications until May 14.

Students, recent graduates and postgraduates who come from underrepresented communities and HBCUs and other minority-serving institutions are strongly encouraged to apply to all of these internships.

The deadline to apply for the ProPublica internships is 5 pm EST on May 28. Learn more about these positions and application details by clicking below.
