The 6th Media Freedom Index, which measures the media freedom within the Eastern Partnership countries (EaP), shows that the Moldovan media is partially free. With some progress on specific areas, but also with regression on others, between July-September 2014 the media in Moldova recorded an index of 6 out of 7.

Moldova is ranked on the second place (with 1322 points) within the member states of the EaP, Georgia being placed on the first position (with 1367 points).  Compared to the previous monitoring period (April-June 2014), Moldova maintains its second position in the ranking, recording a slight increase of the score with 38 points (from 1284 points got in the 4th Index to 1322 points in the 5th Index). Even that, the media experts mentioned that the journalistic practice still does not happen in a climate of full freedom and that internal and external pressures on journalistic activities had not been overcome.

Also, referring strictly to the assessed period (July–September 2014), the experts noticed the declared openness of authorities to solve some problems in the media field, but only some of these intentions materialized in concrete actions, and the sustainability of these actions was not ensured.

Launched by the IJC, the Media Freedom Index is a study conducted by 10 independent media experts and produced with the support of the European Union. Besides Republic of Moldova, the project takes place in Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan – the other 5 member states of the Eastern Partnership.

The Media Freedom Index, report and expert recommendations are edited as part of the ”ENP East Media Freedom Watch” project, implemented by the Independent Journalism Center (IJC), between March 2013-February 2015, in partnership with Internews Ukraine and with support from the European Union.
