Tolerance and responsibility in media are two key elements of the “Press can’t hate!” campaign launched by the Independent Journalism Center in the month of July.

Through this campaign IJC will encourage journalists to commit high-quality journalism, to cover in a fair and objective manner socially vulnerable people and minorities topics, without promoting stereotypes or instigating hate. Also, media consumers will be encouraged to be tolerant and have respect to diversity in all its forms, especially when they express their opinions in social networks and websites.

During the campaign, IJC will present the results of a monitoring report of 15 informational portals, which evaluates the level of hate speech, analyzes the way online media cover sensitive topics and how web sites moderators administer comments posted by readers.

In order to raise awareness among media consumers, IJC will produce video spots through which messages of tolerance will be launched. The video spots will be broadcasted on local and national TV stations. These messages of tolerance will be also promoted through a series of articles published on Media Azi website.

A couple of Press Club meetings will be dedicated to the topics of Human Rights and antidiscrimination, where bloggers and journalists from online media will be invited to participate.

The “Press can’t hate!” campaign is carried out within the project “Combating hate speech in online media and social networks”, implemented by IJC and financially supported by the IJC partner Civil Rights Defenders, Sweden.
