The students of the department of journalism and public communication of Moldova University of European Studies (MUES) participated in a somewhat unusual lesson organized by the Independent Journalism Center on Monday, September 28, 2015.
The topic was hate speech, how it manifests online and on social networks. Oleg Brega, activist and co-founder of Curaj TV, presented to students several examples of images, posts, comments by which Internet users expressed their intolerance and even hatred towards persons representing some ethnic minorities, religious groups, or the LGBT community. In the opinion of Oleg Brega, the phenomenon can be stopped or minimized by denouncing messages that instigate to hatred and by promoting an attitude of mutual acceptance between members of society in mass media, in the spirit of respect of human rights.
The lesson on the topic of hate speech was continued by Veaceslav Balan, human rights expert. He explained that hate speech often manifests as public expression of denigrating, offending messages towards certain persons for the fact that they belong to a minority or a religious or sexual group.
In conclusion, Veaceslav Balan underlined that an individual’s personal and social options, even if they are different than those of the entire community, should not be a reason for that person’s discrimination.
