Some Moldovan officials, who had been criticized in the media, filed lawsuits against media outlets, invoking violation of honor and dignity. On the other hand, journalists claim that public officials are intolerant of criticism and that the amounts they demand in court for damages can lead media outlets to bankruptcy.

Honor, dignity and professional ethics was the topic of the current issue of Media Azi show, and it was discussed by journalist Ivan Sveatcenco and his guest Robert Zapadinsky, editor-in-chief of Kommersant-info newspaper.

“In recent years, we keep dealing with lawsuits,” says Robert Zapadinsky, referring to the 2 cases won by Kommersant-info at ECHR. “The times when a publication could be closed at the indication of a party activist have already passed. Today, there are other levers – the publication of TV channel are sued, the court decides against them, and the damages demanded by the complainant are so big that can lead media outlets to bankruptcy”, the guest claims.

In the show, you will also find answers to other questions: Since political parties are funded from the budget in order to make them independent, why can’t money be found in the budget to fund independent media outlets, too? Who is interested in having obedient media and citizens not knowing the truth about the country they live in?

In the context of the upcoming presidential elections, the topic of journalist ethics was also discussed. According to Robert Zapadinsky, in the situation when the media faces serious economic problems, it is expected that some media outlets will support the candidates who “will give them money for editing.”

The two journalists also spoke about the lack of solidarity in the media community, mentioning that although there are a lot of media associations, journalists’ interests are not protected.

The Media Azi show is produced by the Independent Journalism Center and can be watched on Media Azi and Mediacritica portals and on YouTube.
