Teenagers are the most exposed to dangers in the virtual environment, and one of the most serious dangers is the phenomenon of suicide, the Press Club participants said. They spoke about the measures to prevent and combat depressive and inappropriate behavior of young people.
According to Pierre-Andre Michaud, the phenomenon of suicide is a major danger that cannot be removed by means of momentary solutions. “Young people in adolescence have the temptation to play with death; they are not afraid of anything and fall under the influence of these games. But there is also one extremely important thing – we, adults, behave inadequately with adolescents, provoking them to extreme actions by prohibiting access to the Internet. We must supervise the young people’s activities and communicate about their mental states and the problems they face,” said Pierre-Andre Michaud, who advised young people not to take over everything that the online environment offers, but to filter information.
Galina Lesco shared his opinion. According to her, adolescents need to be supervised and encouraged to communicate about their problems. “As a specialist in this field, I can note that the media most often present teenagers in a negative manner, considering that they always have problems, that they are helpless. From here we have to start, changing the journalists’ vision of adolescents, so that they can see in these young people the greatest potential, able to change something in society,” mentioned the director of the Youth Friendly Center “Neovita”.
The topic has also awakened the interest of parents, especially of mothers, who came to talk with specialists. They wanted to know how to prevent suicide and what they should do when they notice something strange in their child’s behavior.
Lilian Carp, Moldovan MP representing the Liberal Party, spoke about the measures the authorities should take: “When the scale of this game grew, we created a committee to find solutions that would improve the existing legal framework to prevent suicide,” Lilian Carp said.
On May 10, a working group will draft the cross-sector roadmap to increase the efficiency of actions and cooperation at different levels and sectors in order to prevent suicidal behaviors among adolescents.
