The IJC Announces the Results of the First Stage of the Contest “Media Education Is My School’s Priority”

The Independent Journalism Center (IJC) has selected 12 winners of the first stage of the contest “Media Education – a Priority in My School” launched in order to support and encourage teachers’ efforts to educate their pupils’ critical thinking.

20 pre-university education institutions from the Republic of Moldova where Media Education is taught as an optional subject in the 2020-2021 school year were enrolled in the contest.

During the dossier assessment process, the jury composed of the IJC and the donors’ representatives considered the suggested activities and the schools’ project management experience, selecting institutions from different regions of the republic, including those with the Russian language of instruction.

The winners of the first stage of the contest are listed below in random order:

  1. Mihail Barca Theoretical Lyceum, Milestii Mici, Ialoveni District (with the Romanian language of instruction)
  2. Dimitrie Cantemir Theoretical Lyceum, Chisinau Mun. (with the Russian language of instruction)
  3. Brinzenii Vechi Gymnasium, Brinzenii Vechi Village, Telenesti District (with the Romanian language of instruction)
  4. Slobozia Chiscareni Gymnasium, Slobozia Chiscareni Village, Singerei District (with the Russian language of instruction)
  5. Ivan Vazov Theoretical Lyceum, Taraclia Town, Taraclia District (with the Russian language of instruction)
  6. Mihai Eminescu Theoretical Lyceum, Drochia Town, Drochia District (with the Romanian language of instruction)
  7. Mihai Eminescu Theoretical Lyceum, Falesti Town, Falesti District (with the Romanian language of instruction)
  8. Nicolae Tretiakov Theoretical Lyceum, Comrat  Mun. (with the Russian language of instruction)
  9. Onisifor Ghibu Theoretical Lyceum, Chisinau Mun. (with the Romanian language of instruction)
  10. Olimp Theoretical Lyceum, Puhaceni Village, Anenii Noi District (with the Romanian language of instruction)
  11. Onisifor Ghibu Theoretical Lyceum, Orhei Town, Orhei District (with the Romanian language of instruction)
  12. Petru Rares Theoretical Lyceum, Soroca Town, Soroca Mun. (with the Romanian language of instruction)

The selected institutions will have six months, from November 1, 2020, to April 30, 2021, and financial support equal to 300 Euros at their disposal to practice media education activities, such as debates, video contests, workshops for parents, visiting editorial boards, keeping school blogs, and conducting flashmobs or quizzes.

  • Primary school teachers, together with pupils/teachers/parents, will organize activities titled “I Want to Be a Media Creator”.
  • Gymnasium level teachers, together with pupils/teachers/parents, will organize activities titled “Online Safety: Who My Virtual Friends Are”.
  • Lyceum level teachers, together with pupils/teachers/parents, will organize activities titled “Critical Thinking: Privilege or Necessity?”

In the end, each institution will present a portfolio of activities organized from November 1, 2020, to April 30, 2021. The event for presenting media literacy activities at the 12 educational institutions listed in the competition will take place in Chisinau in May 2021. Each participant will have 15 minutes for presenting their portfolio to the jury.
 
The members of the jury composed of the representatives of the IJC, the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Research, and the donors and experts in the field, will select 3 winners from the 12 educational institutions taking part in the contest.

They will be awarded an interactive smartboard provided within the project “Strengthening Media and Information Literacy in the Republic of Moldova” implemented with the support of Deutsche Welle Akademie and with the financial support of the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
