The prize is usually awarded every one or two years to “a person or international organization for their commitment to democracy”. By 2014, it had been awarded to former Czech President Václav Havel (2009), Iranian human rights defender and Nobel peace laureate Shirin Ebadi (2010) and President of Tunisia’s first constituent assembly Yadh Ben Achour (2012).
During the ceremony, Bettermann (former head of the German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle) mentioned that freedom of information is one of the key pillars of a democratic society, while Deloire said that the prize will give greater force to RWB and to journalists to “continue their daily battle”.
