”When you watch the news, take a step back, analyze the information and do not believe everything. A report must refer to at least two sources which present different opinions. But there are news that only mimic pluralism, showing multiple sources which actually support the same position. Be careful to these techniques of manipulation!”, L. Barbăroşie cautioned the pupils.
The journalist also spoke to young people about processes such as ,,Berlusconisation of the press'', which unfortunately can be attested to some extent in Moldova too. So, several media sources belong to a single owner, who promotes his own political interests. L. Barbăroşie reminded about the mechanism encountered in democratic countries to make public the names of the owners of media institutions so that the public can understand if there is any interference in the editorial policy, and to decide for themselves what to believe and what not to believe from the information given by the press.
Young people from Orhei took the opportunity to put more questions to Liliana Barbăroşie, especially referring to her experience as Radio Free Europe journalist. They mentioned after the activity that they understood how necessary it is to check carefully the information that we read in the press.
"I really enjoyed this lesson, because I learned a lot of useful information, and now I know how to consume media in the right way" said Nadejda Condrea, pupil in the XIIth grade, a participant in the lesson.
Her colleague, Alexander Grigoraş added: ”Much of today's information was new, and I really made a conclusion for the future about how news should be.”
Marina Parvan, also a pupil of XIIth grade noted the usefulness of the media literacy lesson: "This activity was a very useful experience and thanks to it I have formulated my own opinions about our television channels and the truth about them."
The media literacy lesson took place as part of the project “Promoting media literacy among Moldovan citizens”, implemented by the IJC between March 2014 and April 2015 with the financial support of the US Embassy in Moldova.
