The Public Opinion Barometer presented by experts of the Institute for Public Policy (IPP) showed that television remains the main source of information for the majority of Moldovan citizens. The second place is held by radio, while the internet came in third. Newspapers, according to the poll, are read only by some 8% of the population.
Over 85% of respondents watch TV every day, and for 70% it is the main source of information. At the same time, 62% of interviewees said they trusted TV news most of all.
Under these circumstances, an interesting factor is the nearly equal ratio of Moldovans who are pro-European integration (47.7% of respondents) and those who favor the Customs Union led by Russia (46.2%). Expert Viorel Cibotaru from IPP believes that TV channels rebroadcasting content of Russian channels have a huge impact on public attitude. He added there was a clear link between the level of public trust in television and the population’s views on integration processes. For instance, Prime TV, which rebroadcasts Pervi Kanal from Russia, is Moldovans’ favorite TV channel and considered the most objective.
On the other hand, 48% of respondents listen to the radio every day, although it comes in third in terms of confidence (5%). The second most trusted source for Moldovans is the internet (17%). Newspapers are the least popular: only 7% of the population reads them every day and only 1.1% trusts them.
Also, the majority of respondents (56%) believe they have free access to information. One third of interviewees believes, however, that access is restricted.
The Public Opinion Barometer was carried out by CBS-AXA experts from November 6th to 15th, involving 1,144 respondents and was commissioned by the Institute for Public Policy in Moldova. The statistical error was estimated to 3%.
