From October 1, 2017, the new amendments to the Broadcasting Code regarding protection of linguistic and national cultural heritage enter into force. Broadcasters are required to air domestic products at least 8 hours of the daily broadcast volume, all between the hours of 06.00 and 24.00.

At the same time, at least 6 hours of domestic product shall be broadcast in prime time, of which at least 4 hours in Romanian.
Also, broadcasters that retransmit program services of foreign radios or televisions and do not have 8 hours of domestic product will not be able to air advertising.
The Broadcasting Coordinating Council (BCC) announced in a press release that it will strictly supervise how national broadcasters ensure the implementation of national legislation in this aspect.

“The Broadcasting Coordinating Council reiterates its firm conviction that the new amendments to the Broadcasting Code will contribute significantly, with competence and exigency, to the development of domestic production of programs, stimulating and cultivating among the general public authentic cultural and national creation, democratic values and principles, truth and human dignity,” according to the BCC press release.

The sanctions that broadcasters risk for non-compliance with legislation shall be applied gradually – from public warning to suspension of the broadcasting license or of the authorization for retransmission.
