Journalists and representatives of civil society and of some political parties came to support “Ziarul de Garda” (ZdG) newspaper, whose members of staff conducted on Monday, October 16, a flash mob in front of the Global Business Center (GBC) after ZdG reporters Marina Ciobanu and Viorica Tataru were stopped by the building’s security agents from filming in that place last week.

Participants in the action carried placards that said “GBC guards are not the masters of journalists,” and “Journalists are not intimidated.” “There is currently no law prohibiting a reporter to film or do his work in street,” said ZdG Director Alina Radu.

The two ZdG journalists, along with some other colleagues, entered the GBC to ask for explanations about last week’s incident. The receptionist could not provide such information, but the group of people was approached by Oleg Cristal, a counselor of the Democratic Party chairman Vlad Plahotniuc, saying he regretted what had happened.

Oleg Cristal also mentioned that, as far as he knows, the security guards involved had been sanctioned. Referring to the flash mob, Cristal said it was inappropriate and that such actions are intended to crush the image of the Democratic Party leader.

Media NGOs condemned the abuse committed by those who impeded the two ZdG journalists to film in the public space around the building of the Global Business Center and asked the Ministry of Internal Affairs to investigate this case.

The General Police Inspectorate announced in a press release that it had taken note of this case.
