A contest for the journalists promoting gender balance, twenty “Divided by two” shows and ten media outlets monitored in terms of observing gender balance – all these were implemented within the “Media for Gender Balance” campaign carried out by the Independent Journalism Center (IJC) from April 2017 until April 2018.

The twenty “Divided by two” shows addressed gender balance issues from different perspectives and spotlighted certain topics that are not widely discussed in the media: postnatal depression, men’s reproductive health, paternal leaves, sexist advertising, sexual harassment, etc. The shows can be watched on the IJC’s YouTube channel and on the moldova-azi.md multimedia platform. Also, all the shows were broadcasted by regional media, such as Elita TV, Canal Regional, Albasat TV and Axial TV, as well as by several online portals: diez.md, ea.md, moldova.org and agora.md. The public television Moldova 1 broadcasted the shows beginning in February 2018.

The contest for the journalists who address and respect gender balance was organized by the IJC in the period of April-August 2017. Thirteen journalists submitted twenty-one materials, and the jury announced five winners: 1st place (EUR 500) - Cristina Cucos (suntparinte.md); 2nd place (EUR 300) - Victoria Coroban (Radio Chisinau) and Diana Gatcan (TV 8); 3rd place (EUR 200) - Nelly Lanskaia (SP Balti) and Valentina Varban (“Teleradio-Gagauzia” Public Company).

Media monitoring was performed from November 6 until December 3, 2017, and it showed that many of the media outlets fail to ensure gender balance and are not concerned with the promotion of equal opportunities through their journalistic products. The contribution of media outlets and the involvement of journalists in achieving this goal is non-uniform in terms of gender balance and of the way men and women are portrayed.

The content analysis of the ten media outlets monitored from the perspective of gender balance has been formulated in the report presented by the IJC to the public.

The IJC will continue implementing various initiatives aimed at promoting gender balance in society.

The “Media for Gender Balance” campaign was implemented by the Independent Journalism Center with the financial support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency through the Embassy of Sweden in Chisinau.
