The Press Council Elected its Chairperson

On Thursday, 21 March, the journalist Viorica Zaharia was reelected as the Chairperson of the Press Council (PC), during the first meeting of PC in its new composition.

The Press Council consists of nine people, selected through a public competition for a two-year term. The new PC composition elected in February 2019, consists of five representatives of the journalistic environment – Tudor Iascenco, proposed by the editorial office of the ‘Cuvantul’ weekly newspaper (Rezina), Carmelia Albu, from the NPAI ‘Teleradio-Moldova’ Company, Viorica Tataru Craitamandra, from the ‘Ziarul de Garda’ editorial office, Viorica Zaharia, proposed by the Association of Independent Press and Ecaterina Rotari, from the Canal Regional TV. Four other members are representatives of media consumers – Olga Manole, from a media consumers group, Natalia Porubin, proposed by the Investigative Journalism Centre, Ludmila Rusnac, recommended by the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Sciences of the Moldova State University and Andrian Racu, from the Federation of Trade Unions of Communications).

The Press Council is the national structure of journalistic self-regulation. This institution is responsible for monitoring how the Code of Ethics for Moldovan journalists is observed and examining complaints regarding violation of the ethical norms by journalists and media outlets.
Viorica Zaharia held the position of PC Chairperson during 2016–2018.
