Media NGOs express their concern about the degradation of the public communication language used by the Government and ask Prime Minister Ion Chicu, the advisors and the communication officers to adopt a fair and non-discriminatory behaviour in relation to the journalists and editorial offices of media outlets.

Recently, Vitalie Dragancea, adviser to the Prime Minister Ion Chicu, while speaking to the reporter of the weekly newspaper ‘Ziarul de Garda’ made some statements that revealed his lack of communication skills that his position requires. When ZdG asked the adviser to organise an interview with the Prime Minister, the adviser stated ‘I choose the media outlets with the highest impact’ and that ‘I didn’t commit to satisfy anyone’.

Earlier, Prime Minister Ion Chicu, responded in a frivolous manner to the invitation of PRO TV Chisinau to attend the talk show ‘In profunzime’ [lit. In Depht], and wrote on social media that he would go to another TV channel because ‘that’s where television is, not “Santa Barbara”’.

We remind that the Government should ensure effective communication with various media outlets, so that the information could reach a wider public and not just the supporters of certain political mainstreams, and the officials and civil servants must answer the questions of the journalists, including uncomfortable ones. In their public communication, officials and civil servants remunerated from the taxes paid by all citizens of the Republic of Moldova cannot rely on discrimination, selective approach, labeling of editorials and journalists, but neither on subjective assessment of their professionalism. We remind the public officials that the complaints about the editorial behaviour of the media outlets can be submitted to the Press Council of the Republic of Moldova – a national structure of journalistic self-regulation.

The signatory organisations ask Prime Minister Ion Chicu, his advisers and communication officers to adopt fair and non-discriminatory behaviour in relation to the journalists and editorials. We reiterate that the commitments at international and European level assumed by the Government of the Republic of Moldova, also include ensuring full access to information of public interest, pluralism, respect for freedom of press and the rights of journalists, and the fact that some new employees in the system do not have the necessary training and skills can be addressed through an action plan and by providing professional training in the field of communication with the citizens and journalists.
