Three mixed teams of journalists from both banks of the Dniester who have presented five multimedia product concepts will be consulted on new technologies in July and offered financial support of 1 500 Euros each within the project titled “Promoting Media Dialogue on Both Banks of the Dniester” implemented by the Independent Journalism Center (IJC).
7 mixed teams which initially had taken part in the training “Journalists from the Right and the Left Banks of the Dniester Create Multimedia Content” were registered for the contest. Subsequently, the trained teams filed 9 concepts of materials, and the winners were selected by the jury members based on the relevance of the concept, the importance of the issue to be considered, the impact, the audience, and media coverage.
The teams are listed below in random order:
- Viorica Tataru, Andrei Captarenco, and Veaceslav Popescul
- Irina Glusco and Andrei Sura
- Luiza Dorosenco, Margarita Cojuhari, and Vitalie Smacov
The team that includes Viorica Tataru, journalist, Andrei Captarenco, producer, TV8, Chisinau Mun., and Veaceslav Popescul, coordinator of the Healthcare Platform, Slobozia District, suggested making a multimedia material titled “The Price of Life between the Two Banks”. The team members intend to study the living standards of people (of different ages and social groups) on both banks of the Dniester to figure out by comparison what is the “price of life”, both literally and figuratively, taking into account all aspects of survival in this area – from the price of a loaf of bread to that of the word and the freedom of expression.”
The team which consists of Irina Glusco, journalist, “MIR” Interstate TV Company, Tiraspol, and Andrei Sura, cameraman and image editor, MIR” Interstate TV Company, Chisinau Mun., presented two concepts of multimedia products for the contest. In the first material, “Electrification of the Dniester”, the journalists will discuss the issue of construction of new Ukrainian hydroelectric power plants on the Dniester. The aspects related to developing energy sector infrastructure and its eventual impact on the most important waterway of Moldova will be examined.
The second multimedia concept of this team is titled “Street Children: They’re Not Gonna Get Us” and is dedicated to kids who end up spending their time roaming the streets/in abandoned buildings. “We would like to examine and understand the problem, and find out why, after the reform for reducing the number of boarding schools and the emergence of family-type orphanages, the issue of abandoned children and minors has not been solved. So far, children, teenagers, and even adults wander the streets of our country, breaking the laws, taking drugs, and escaping from placement centers,” the authors of the concept remark.
Two multimedia material concepts were presented by the third winning team which includes Luiza Dorosenco, Centrul Media NGO director, Grigoriopol Mun., Margarita Cojuhari, journalist, Media Center, Tiraspol Mun., and Vitalie Smacov, journalist, Newsmaker.md. The first material will be a documentary on the traditions, problems, and everyday life of the Romani community in the Transnistrian region. “Via the protagonists of the movie, we would like to reveal the problem of Romani integration in society, and to discuss the issues of the rebirth of the language, cultural, and spiritual traditions of the Romani,” the authors specify.
The second multimedia concept is about the issue of domestic violence. “It will be a short documentary based on the stories of some women who have suffered from domestic violence. Via the protagonists of the film, we intend to explain why we need a functional law to prevent domestic violence, and demonstrate how the authorities’ response to the problem could be improved, as well as how specialist training in the sphere in question could be favored.”
During online mentoring sessions to be held in July, the teams will be instructed on preparing multimedia content by the two coaches, the journalists with vast experience in digital technologies. They are Gulim Amirkhanova, TV journalist and author of training programs in the spheres of TV and online journalism from Kazakhstan, and coach Ana Gherciu, journalist and executive director at Moldova.org.
As part of the mentoring program, the coaches will provide practical tips and recommendations on adjusting and defining the concepts to finally create quality multimedia products. For creating multimedia materials, each of the three teams will also benefit from financial support of 1 500 Euros. The materials are to be prepared (filmed and edited) by the end of August, and in September, they have to be published by at least two media institutions on both banks of the Dniester.
The consulting program is organized by the Independent Journalism Center with the financial support of the OSCE Mission to the Republic of Moldova within the project “Promoting Media Dialogue on Both Banks of the Dniester.”
