The Broadcasting Council (BC) decided to monitor the newscasts of all national television stations between October 5 and 10, 2021. The decision was made after Liliana Nicolaescu-Onofrei, the head of the Parliament’s Commission for Culture, Education, Research, Youth, Sport, and the Media, asked the BC to monitor television stations Moldova 1, Primul în Moldova, and NTV Moldova in connection with the way they informed the public about events during the indicated period.

Ala Ursu-Antoci, head of the BC, announced at the meeting of October 15 that the notification from Liliana Nicolaescu-Onofrei was received on October 11. She proposed, however, monitoring the main newscasts of all national providers of media services. “Given that only three national media service providers were indicated, while all media service providers have the obligation to provide correct information to the public, and taking into account the technical capabilities of the BC and the fact that national providers have a greater contribution to the formation of public opinion, I propose taking note of the notification and find it appropriate to monitor the main newscasts of national media service providers,” Ala Ursu-Antoci argued.

The proposal was supported by all BC members present at the meeting.

Previously, Liliana Nicolaescu-Onofrei told Media Azi that she decided to notify the BC because the three TV stations broadcast incorrect information about the case of Alexandr Stoianoglo and about the actions of the Government and the Presidency. “The coverage of Alexandr Stoianoglo’s case and the presentation of manipulative, untruthful news that the Government is raising prices, the Government is not doing this, Maia Sandu is doing this. Serious things, in my opinion, and even denigration. (…) If you watched news and debates, only towards the end of the week other opinions and third parties were mentioned. The BC should take its monitoring and surveillance duties seriously,” Liliana Nicolaescu-Onofrei explained.
