A professional journalist does not write news based on rumors, verifies the information from multiple sources and makes representative vox populi – these are just some of the news writing rules which were presented to the students of the “Mihail Sadoveanu” High School from Hancesti during a new media literacy lesson. The event was organized by the Independent Journalism Center on September 18.

The activity was moderated by Diana Railean, Radio Free Europe journalist, who also talked to pupils about their right to express disapproval when journalists presented untrue information, which could be done through contacting the editorial office, the Moldovan Press Council or by switching to other media sources.

In order to better understand how to distinguish the correct media content from the manipulating one, some edited and retouched pictures that changed their original message, insufficiently documented news, as well as TV materials supporting specific political views were presented to the students. They were actively involved in the discussions and said that, especially before the parliamentary elections, they have to be careful with the information they read in the media.

”I found out a lot of new things towards which I did not pay attention before, for example that sometimes in media also false information circulate”, told us the Xth grade student  Valeriu Deliu.

Adriana Butnaru, Xth grade student as well, mentioned: ”This activity was useful and interesting, and made us to understand that there are many people with interests, but there are also honest, professional journalists, that do not care about the financial benefits”. Her colleague, Nicoleta Scutaru underlined: ”I appreciate that you informed us about the correct way we have to read the news. This lesson will help me in the future to analyze any journalistic materials”.

The students concluded that besides journalists, who have to be impartial, also the media consumers have the obligation of informing themselves correctly from the media, to follow the journalistic products with critical eyes and to penalize the authors in case of biased information.

The event took place as part of the project “Promoting media literacy among Moldovan citizens”, implemented by the IJC between March 2014 and April 2015 with the financial support of the US Embassy in Moldova.
