”Vasile Alecsandri” Theoretical High-school from Calarasi hosted a new media literacy lesson, organized by IJC, on September 24, during which more students have learned about media functions, news writing rules and how to consume media products in order to avoid manipulation.
”The news has to be based on facts, not opinions and to reflect at least two sources in order to remain impartial. The questions that it has to give answers to, are: Who? What? Where? When? How? Why?, and eventually, What are the consequences?” – explained to the students the session moderator, Liliana Barbarosie (Radio Free Europe journalist).
Due to the media literacy lesson participants learned for the first time about the press functions: to inform (the essential function), to educate, to persuade and to socialize, as well as about the harmful effects that media may cause: manipulation and propaganda.
Trying to elucidate what the reasons that make some media institutions to misinform their public are, the students have listed among others: the existence of political and economical interests of the media owners, the wish of hiding some true facts from the public opinion and the financial dependency on sponsors.
The students expressed the certainty that this media literacy lesson will help them in future to distinguish the professional journalistic articles from the false ones and to assimilate the information that appear with critical eyes. ”It was a very interesting and useful activity that will help us to become informed citizens”, concluded Elena Seretan, Xth grade student.
The event took place as part of the project “Promoting media literacy among Moldovan citizens”, implemented by the IJC between March 2014 and April 2015 with the financial support of the US Embassy in Moldova.
