The journalist Dumitru Lazur, moderator of this week's edition of Media Azi broadcast, talks to Dumitru Ciorici, media entrepreneur, co-founder of Agora.md news website, about the new professional challenges and the impact of social networks on journalism.

Over the past years, more and more people usually get informed on social networks. Public personalities, including the politicians, post on them views and information about their work. Their posts are further disseminated by journalists, becoming hence news. How to explain the emergence and the perpetuation of such a type of journalism?

According to Dumitru Ciorici, it has become common for journalists to find a press-release on Facebook, rather than to receive it by email, as it occurred 5-10 years ago. “Messages posted by public personalities or those which are a matter of concern for journalists may be disseminated by them, after a deep documentation about the respective issue”, the broadcast’s guest states.

How to justify the rush to publish a story based on not more than a Facebook post?? And, at the same time, how to stand up to media consumers’ request for rapid information, that somehow justifies the rush for speedy dissemination of news? What should we do to be sure that the information found on social networks is true, and that the person who posted is a real one?

This broadcast will give you answers to the above-mentioned, as well as to other questions, such as: are principles like source verification, accuracy and equidistance really important in the digital age? How do readers react to false news or to headlines that distort the reality? Aren’t all these causes of the regression of autochthonous journalism?

We remind you that “Media Azi” broadcast is a product of Independent Journalism Center and can be viewed on Media Azi, Mediacritica websites and on YouTube.
