More than 50 students of the Theoretical Highschool “Ion Creanga” from Floresti have participated on  January, 30, in a media literacy lesson, organized by the Independent Journalism Center.

The event was moderated by Diana Railean, Radio Free Europe journalist, who discussed with the students about the information function of mass-media, and about the risk of manipulation to which the public is exposed when reading the news, listening or watching different journalistic subjects.

The journalist explained to the young people what the rule of two independent sources means, as well as the separation of facts from opinions, which makes the difference between an objective press subject and a manipulative one. In order to avoid manipulation, D. Railean recommended to the students to inform themselves correctly, by reading and consulting multiple sources. “If the journalist gives his/her opinion in a news, then you have the right to doubt that information”, added D. Railean.

According to the participants, the meeting was interesting and valuable, as it taught them to verify the information from several sources, as not everything that mass-media shows is actually true.

“This kind of lessons are very necessary, because the students are encouraged to inform themselves correctly and to form their own opinion regarding the events that take place in the country and abroad. We need these media literacy lessons in order to form a well developed civil society”, mentioned Cristian Constanda, student in XIth grade.

Veronica Descan, student in the XII grade added: “A well informed person is a powerful person, so I prefer to be well informed and safe, without letting myself influenced.”

Until now, more than 400 students have participated in the media literacy lessons organized by the IJC in schools from different localities of Moldova.

The event took place as part of the project “Promoting media literacy among Moldovan citizens”, implemented by the IJC between March 2014 and April 2015 with the financial support of the US Embassy in Moldova.
