Media NGOs of Moldova qualify the Government’s decision of October 12, 2016 proposing dismissal of Ion Terguta from the position of director of “MIR” broadcasting company as a reaction to the journalist’s often criticism of the current country’s leadership, to his trenchant position towards issues urgent for Moldovan media, such as concentration of media outlets in the hands of a group of politicians, monopoly on the advertising market, etc.

We are concerned about the decision proposing to the Board of “MIR” to appoint to this position journalist Valeriu Renita, former spokesman of ex-president Vladimir Voronin. In our opinion, this appointment is part of the current government’s strategy of subordinating as many media outlets as possible and transforming them into a mouthpiece of governing forces, contributing thus to the concentration of mass media.

From the reception room of “MIR” company’s Chairman R. I. Batarsin we were told that they have no information about the dismissal of Ion Terguta.

We demand the Government to review the decision of October 12. “MIR” broadcasts 24/7 on the territories of the majority of countries forming the Commonwealth of Independent States, to dozens of million viewers, so it is very important for the channel to correctly and neutrally cover the situation in Moldova.

We shall also ask “MIR” management to note that by removing journalist Ion Terguta from the position of director of “MIR”, the Government committed an act of injustice, based not on grounds related to professionalism, but on the interest of some government officials to subordinate the media.
