The media literacy lessons organized by the Independent Journalism Center continued in Nisporeni, where, on the October 16, 27 students of the Theoretical High-school “Boris Cazacu” have participated in a media literacy lesson, moderated by the Radio Free Europe journalist, Liliana Barbarosie.

“The media product, just like food, if it doesn’t respect several rules and quality norms, can be extremely harmful for the consumers. Media propaganda often takes place through the violation of journalistic rules, and in Moldova, unfortunately, many TV channels belong to politicians, who try to get voters in such a way”, explained to the students L. Barbarosie.

Among the criteria that news have to follow, the journalist emphasized the two sources rule, especially in the case of conflict subjects, which necessarily have to present the points of view of the both involved parts.

During the lessons it was also mentioned about the role of the news to present facts, not opinions, the first ones being more important, because they allow the consumers to make their own conclusions. In this regard, the students remarked that in society the tendency of considering everything that appears on TV as true still persists and the public many times lacks the critical analysis of the information in the press. Therefore, the students appreciated the importance of such activities as the media literacy lessons.

“Every day I watch most of the TV channels and I realize that unfortunately, many of them serve some private interests, but not the public one. I am glad to see that still there are some independent media”, told us Dan Drumea, student in the XIIth grade.

Victoria Farama, also student in the last grade of high-school, told us that she was captivated by the topic: “I discovered many new things and I am sure from now on I will be much more conscious and responsible when choosing the information”.

Her colleague, Adriana Ciochina mentioned that after the media literacy lesson she understood how important is the role of the journalist in the society and that she herself will think of the possibility to become a journalist. ”I met new people, with different ideas and points of view, comparing to what I have heard until now. The things that I have learned today will motivate me in choosing my future profession”, said  Adriana at the end of the event.

The event took place as part of the project “Promoting media literacy among Moldovan citizens”, implemented by the IJC between March 2014 and April 2015 with the financial support of the US Embassy in Moldova
