The 2019-2020 academic year had a good start for media literacy. For the first time, the Media Education optional course is taught at all three stages of school education – primary, lower secondary and higher secondary level.

The Independent Journalism Centre (IJC) has organised a series of trainings for teachers recently, thus increasing the number of teachers who decided to become ambassadors of media literacy in their schools.

This school year Media Education is taught by 34 primary school teachers and 35 secondary school teachers. 2019-2020 is the first academic year when Media Education also reached the high school level, after the National Curriculum Council of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research approved the new course programme in August 2019. As a result, nine high school teachers got involved in teaching this optional subject shortly after participating in the trainings organised by IJC.

The course is taught by 78 teachers, in 105 classes, for 2723 pupils from Chisinau, Calarasi, Ungheni, Cimislia, Dubasari, Stefan Voda, Criuleni, Sangerei, Anenii Noi, Ialoveni, Hancești, Orhei, Falesti, Balti, Ocnița, Straseni, Glodeni, Floresti, Soroca, Cahul, Basarabeasca.

IJC continues to promote media literacy to consumers of different ages. Media Literacy Week takes place for the second time in Moldova, during the period of 21-27 October 2019, and involves teachers, pupils and parents from the schools where Media Education is taught.

In the video below you can see how this course is taught, as well as teachers’ and pupils’ opinions about it.

The Independent Journalism Centre organises media literacy activities as part of ‘Strengthening Freedom of Opinion in the Republic of Moldova’ project, implemented by IJC with the support of Deutsche Welle Akademie and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, and ‘Media Enabling Democracy, Inclusion and Accountability in Moldova (MEDIA-M)’ project, funded by USAID, UK Aid and implemented by Internews in Moldova.
