Mass media need to correctly and objectively inform citizens, and journalists need to have access to any information of public interest – such is the message of a new video launched by the Independent Journalism Center (IJC). The video has been produced in support of the campaign for improvement of the legal framework governing access to information, initiated by the IJC. During this campaign, the IJC will organize a series of events to discuss the role of mass media in provision of correct information to citizens, as well as the need to introduce new legal provisions that would facilitate the access of mass media to information.

We shall remind that the IJC has sent for examination to the Parliament, Presidency and Government a set of proposals to modify Law no. 982-XIV of May 11, 2000 on access to information (articles 15 and 16) and the Contraventions Code of the Republic of Moldova no. 218-XVI of October 24, 2008 (article 71). The draft law is aimed at improving the procedure of registration of requests for information, at reducing the time limits for answering these requests, and at tightening the punishment for violation of legislation on access to information by the persons responsible for provision of information.

This campaign has been possible due to the generous help of the American people through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The opinions here are those of authors and might not reflect the position of the USAID or the U.S. Government.
