The Independent Journalism Center (IJC) supports the Appeal of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), released on the occasion of the International Women’s Day, to take global action to protect women’s rights, eradicate sexism in the media, and end violence in the workplace.

The IFJ calls on affiliated unions and organizations to demand that female journalists are ensured with the right to hold important positions in the media, to remove the existing gender inequities and to promote equitable gender policies in the media content. According to the IFJ appeal, for female journalists the rise of “acceptable” misogyny is colliding with rising threats to press freedom.

“At a time when tens of thousands of women journalists are facing threats, intimidation, harassment, violence and online and physical abuse the need for action could not be greater,” the appeal reads.
