The Independent Journalism Center and Internews Designated Winners of First Media Innovation Workshop "Drone Journalism"

The first media innovation workshop, “Drone Journalism,” organized by the IJC on November 27-28, was intended to teach journalists the newest methods of producing quality content that would be able to improve interaction between the media and the public.
During the two days, teams made presentations on topics such as “Innovation and successful journalistic projects in other countries,” “Use of drones for journalistic investigation and TV reports,” “Advantages of innovative filming,” “New instruments for journalists,” etc. In their work on the projects, workshop participants were guided by mentors, who offered them consultancy and expertise in developing project ideas.

Among them were Victor Pogor, Radio Chisinau reporter; Angela Ivanesi, media design trainer at the School of Advanced Journalism and media designer at the Association of Independent Press; Andrei Bivol, lawyer and manager at the “Hanganu, Tanase and partners” law office; Dumitru Ciorici, editorial director at Interact Media SRL. Experts from Romania and Ukraine – Laurentiu Balaceanu, Maksym Savciuc and Kyrylo Lazarevich – conducted workshops on work with drones and on production of quality content.

At the end of the event, the jury summed up the results. The winner of the innovation workshop was the “(Un)protected areas” project produced by the Association of Environment Journalists, which will receive a drone as a prize. Another drone will be available for use in rotation by the authors of the other five projects of the workshop, which will have to produce a journalistic material each. The team with the best material will be awarded the second drone as the prize.

Members of the jury – Radio Free Europe editor Alina Turcanu, photography and aerial filming specialist and director of Skycam.ro Laurentiu Balaceanu, and Radio Free Europe Kiev reporter Maksym Savciuc – voted on each project after considering the following criteria: usefulness (importance and timeliness of the covered topic); feasibility (the project proposes concrete solutions that can be realized in real time); innovation (how much the project involves new technologies); the team’s progress during the workshop.

The “Drone Journalism” media innovation workshop is an activity within the “Strengthening Independence in Communication Media in Moldova” project implemented by the Independent Journalism Center.
