The journalists’ crisis cell, set up by the Independent Journalism Center in order to demand transparency and access to information from authorities during the state of emergency, urges the Ministry of Health, Labour and Social Protection (MHLSP) to meet its commitment towards the media.

Note that on 18 April 2020 the Information and Media Communication Service of the MHLSP informed that the institution accepted the joint request of 25 media organizations and institutions whereby journalists asked for online press conferences, with the possibility to ask questions online to authorities.

As a result of this request, the Ministry committed to holding extended format conferences once a week, in addition to the daily briefings during which updated statistical data on the Covid-19 pandemic are provided, but where media representatives do not have access. However, no press conference has been organized yet, with the Ministry representatives invoking various reasons.

We reiterate in this context that the media’s role is to inform citizens in a fair and equidistant way, from different perspectives, on matters related to the crisis. We still believe that by organizing such conferences we will be able to support the Ministry of Health, Labour and Social Protection in its efforts to act transparently and to respect the right of Moldovan people to be informed.

We ask that the MHLSP shares with us as soon as possible the date and time when they will be able to participate in the online conference, with an online Q&A session.

We also ask the Commission for Emergency Situations to make sure that online press conferences are held.
