In the period of September 11-12, a group of journalists participated in a training on the correct and responsible coverage in online media of topics related to minorities and socially vulnerable groups, as well as moderation of online content so as to avoid hate speech.
Journalists discussed about the media coverage of minority groups in the local press, based on concrete examples. Together with Nadine Gogu, director of the Independent Journalism Center (IJC), participants in the training examined various forms of diversity, which can serve as topics for the media. Journalists from local and national media outlets also discussed about the importance of complying with the standards of professional ethics, especially when covering sensitive topics, related to vulnerable people, representatives of minority groups, children, women, people affected by poverty, or victims.
In the second part of the program, Vasile Galusca, development director of the “Interakt” company, spoke to participants about “new media”, “old media”, and modern systems of moderation of readers’ comments on various websites and portals. Participants were encouraged to maintain communication with readers and involve them into ensuring the quality of content on media websites.
“This training has been useful for me. I understood the importance of correctly interacting with readers online. The adoption of an efficient strategy in this regard will be useful for both sides. At the same time, we learned several new methods of covering sensitive topics without supporting the existing prejudices about certain social groups”, said Natalia Screlea, reporter for Unimedia.md.
The training was organized by the IJC as part of the “Combating Hate Speech in Online Media and on Social Networks” project, implemented with the support of Civil Rights Defenders (Sweden), an IJC partner.
