News, sources, journalists, readers and manipulation were the topics of discussion at a media literacy lesson for 41 students of the middle school in Tocuz village, Causeni district. The event was organized by the Independent Journalism Center (IJC) on 28 May.

The lesson facilitated by journalist Diana Railean (Radio Europa Libera) included general notions of mass media and consumption of information. It was followed by several practical exercises for students, which helped them distinguish between news items written professionally from those written incorrectly.

“Before buying shoes, you try on several pairs. Before accepting some news, you should do the same, check from different sources,” Diana Railean advised participants in the discussion.

“This lesson will help us distinguish between false and true news, and each of us will be able to choose the information they want to consume,” student Ana Bejan said.

“The meeting with journalists helped me understand that to be well informed, I need to read news daily and check different sources. This is the only way to avoid the trap of manipulation,” student Valeriu Taran explains.

“The lesson of media literacy helps children discover true information and recognize manipulation in a material, in the situation when they are daily surrounded by information, which they hear and see,” mentioned Nelea Potanga, vice headmistress of the middle school in Tocuz village, Causeni district.

The event took place as part of the project “Promoting media literacy among Moldovan citizens”, implemented by the IJC between March 2013 and April 2014 with the financial support of the US Embassy in Moldova.
