Do we have a free press in Moldova or not? What is a news story and how does it affect people’s lives? What do the terms manipulation and information mean? With these questions, Diana Railean, Radio Free Europe journalist, commenced the media literacy lesson in the theoretical lyceum “Boris Danga” in Criuleni.

The event was organized by the Independent Journalist Center on 15 April 2014.

In the beginning of the lesson, Diana Railean told pupils about the importance of getting information from various sources, while showing several examples of misinformation in media. By means of a case study the journalist analyzed the way in which the same issue was covered by several media outlets. Further, through a practical exercise, the participants were suggested to identify the mistakes and deviations from the journalist code of ethics in different media stories.

During the meeting, while watching a video clip produced by IJC “Do you know to consume media?” the participants showed high interest in journalists’ activity, in the way media stories may be perceived and interpreted and how the manipulation phenomenon arises.

“I was surprised to participate at such a lesson. I learnt that any new item or other story that I read must be analyzed and checked up in various information sources”, said Valeria Novic, pupil of XI class.

“In autumn we have elections, thus it is essential to know how to get better informed, to make an objective opinion about the events that occur in the country and make the right choice”, said Corneliu Doni, pupil of XI class.

This activity was organized in the frame of the project "Promoting media literacy among Moldovan citizens ", implemented by IJC between Martie 2013 – Aprilie 2014, with the financial support of the United States Embassy to Moldova.
