The lecture began with students watching a video clip produced by the IJC, “Do you know what media you consume?”, which was used as basis for discussions about media and the phenomenon of manipulation through means of information.
Vasile Botnaru presented various examples of manipulation and explained to students how poisonous media intoxication can be, advising them to be more careful when getting informed. Also, Vasile Botnaru recommended students to follow the rule of three sources, which is valid both for professional journalists and for consumers of information. “Do not trust a single source. Search for alternative sources. Before letting yourself react to some news, check if it is true,” Vasile Botnaru said.
“Today, we discussed an important issue concerning formation of one’s own opinion about current events, given that too many accessible media are non-credible,” said Larisa Sali, scientific secretary of the TSU. This idea was shared by students. “The activity was interesting and useful. I will be following more sources of information,” said Tudor Grecu, one of the participants.
The lecture on media literacy at the TSU took place as part of the project “Promoting media literacy among Moldovan citizens”, implemented by the IJC between March 2013 and April 2014 with the financial support of the US Embassy in Moldova.
