Non-governmental media organizations express their protest and concern over the assault of Jurnal TV camera crew.

Thus, on Monday, 5 March this year, Jurnal TV camera crew has been documenting a journalistic investigation when it was assaulted at the gate of the businessman Iuri Luncasu. According to the information and videos posted on TV channel’s website, a security guard hit the operator with a snow shovel.

We condemn the violent actions against the journalists in office.  We also note that the Law on Freedom of Expression provides in Article 4 that the media has the duty to inform the public on matters of public interest and perform journalistic investigations in accordance with its responsibilities.

We also remind that words or acts that attack a person’s dignity are subject to contravention liability (Article 69 of the Contravention Code) and the intentional impediment of the media or journalist’s activity is sanctioned by the Criminal Code (Article 180(1)).
We urge the authorities to take prompt actions to punish those guilty in this case. We call on the entire society not to impede the conduct of journalistic investigations on matters of public interest.
