Media ONGs express their concern with the restriction of ZdG journalist Viorica Tataru’s access to the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) territory on Monday, 25 June 2018.
According to the video published on zdg.md website, the journalist tried to clarify why additional police forces have been concentrated on SCJ territory, while in front of its headquarters, where a number of citizens protested and requested the validation of Andrei Nastase mayor mandate, there were already dozens of policemen. The journalist’s attempt to find out why police forces were deployed on SCJ territory was stopped by several persons wearing masks, who forbade her access to the yard. The journalist was told that the management issued an order forbidding one’s access in the back of SCJ building on the ground that the territory belongs to a state institution.
We remind that the media legislation guarantees the media representatives the right to participate in the public events and manifestations, obtain and distribute information, make audiovisual recordings, film and take pictures.
We also specify that Article 1801 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Moldova provides for the criminal liability for intentional obstruction to the activity of a media outlet or a journalist.
We ask the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) to take appropriate measures against those who have restricted the journalist’s access to a public institution, thus preventing her from freely exercise her job.
We urge MIA employees to show propriety in relations with the journalists, for a better information of the citizens.
