The publication is a collection of articles written by 13 journalists from print press, radio, television, online, representatives of national and local media institutions. Journalists were familiarized with gender equality in two training programs, organized by IJC. Subsequently they were encouraged to identify and write compelling topics to address with professionalism and good faith this issue and certain discriminatory attitudes entrenched in society related to men and women.
The collection embodies the joint effort of journalists who were interested in the gender issue and opted for gender equality promotion in journalistic materials in order to eliminate stereotypes that encourage gender gap, so that the media can provide a real visibility of women and men in various fields of activity. Materials illustrate life stories of several women and men, representing successful examples in areas considered to be strictly female or male.
Journalists involved in this project have recognized that this initiative is very welcome: „Stereotypes like „man is a head of the family and the big boss”, „woman's place is in the kitchen” etc. are still entrenched in our society. This puts the woman on the back burner, whereas now we need and it is time to keep pace with reality. I mean that equality relationships / partnerships between women and men need to be practiced. The practice shows that women are dealing quite well with areas that are considered purely male, while men manage to successfully assert themselves in professions, assigned, by stereotype, only to women. I’m sure that this project will be an important support for further promotion of the ideas mentioned above”, Tatiana Mitrofan, reporter of „Observatorul de Nord” said.
The persons, interested in this topic, can get the publication at the headquarters of IJC. The collection is also available in electronic format on the Media-Azi website HERE.
The collection of articles „Balanced approach to gender in media” was published within the project „Changing the perception of women in society through media", implemented by the Independent Journalism Centre, during September 2013 – September 2014, supported by the Netherlands Embassy through MATRA Program.
