35 pupils of the "Petru  Ștefănucă" lyceum in Ialoveni had the opportunity to attend a lesson on media literacy held by Liliana Barbăroșie (Radio Free Europe journalist). The event was organized by the Independent Journalist Center (IJC) on 10 April 2014.

Liliana Barbăroșie explained pupils why it is important to be permanently informed, to read news, to take an interest in the events that occur in the society. As well, the participants discussed about manipulation, propaganda and misinformation. The discussions were based on a case study, that contained both good examples of professional journalism and cases of misinformation and breaches of the journalist code of ethics, both were identified and explained.

“Today’s meeting is very important for pupils. It is a need to be properly informed and know how to avoid manipulation, especially nowadays, when there are so many and so contradictory information sources”, said Vera Balan, lyceum director.

In turn, pupils confessed that they liked the lesson. “Such activities are very useful for us, because we need to be properly informed about social and political issues. Nowadays, the phenomenon of manipulation, actually, ‘floats’ in the air, and people may be easily influenced when they are misinformed”, said Valentina Macovei, pupil of XI-A class.

“The information we heard today will be very useful for me in the future, because an informed young person has a clearer vision about the events in the society” said Chihai Marin, pupil of XI-A class.

In order to understand better the issues on information and manipulations, pupils watched a video spot produced by IJC -"Do you know to consume media?".

This activity was organized in the frame of the project "Promoting media literacy among Moldovan citizens ", implemented by IJC between Martie 2013 – Aprilie 2014, with the financial support of the United States Embassy to Moldova.
