The media education classes, organized by CIJ for education institutions across the country, continued on Wednesday, November 25 at ”Academician C. Sibirschii” high school from Chisinau and the Gymnasium from  Misovca village, Ialoveni district.
This time, the person who helped them to better understand the role and functions of the press was Elena Cobylyan, lecturer in Journalism at Slavonic University.
In the secondary and high school the student  learn how to write essays, applying both their knowledge and imagination. The lecturer Elena Cobylyan explained them that journalistic materials are based exclusively on real facts, not on imagination. Comparing the essay structure with the one of the news, the pupils could make the differences. The news has to contain the following elements: an exact heading, a lead about the importance of the event, some paragraphs with the description of the event itself and background information.
The young people also had to do some practical tasks: they read and analyzed some news, classifying them in true and false. In this context, the lecturer explained the pupils why a news should not contain value judgments, various types of labeling, why it is mandatory to separate the facts from opinions. Otherwise, the news becomes manipulative. The participants were taught how to protect themselves against manipulation by means of media: to compare more media sources before making their own opinion, to be careful to video and advertising spots they watch.
In the pupils’ opinion, the lesson was very useful. Maria Droseva, pupil in Gymnasium from village of Misovca mentioned: “I understood that in order to avoid manipulation and to learn about what was happening around us, we must verify the information, watch more TV channels, read more newspapers and information portals”. Her colleague, Anastasia Diacenco added: “From now on, I will follow how the same event is addressed by various media portals, so as to avoid being manipulated”.

Media lessons held in ”Academician C. Sibirschii” high school from Chisinau and the Gymnasium from village of Misovca, district of Ialoveni, concluded the series  of the 16 visits in gymnasiums, high schools and universities across the country within the project
“Freedom of expression and media development in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and South Caucasus", implemented by CIJ during the period May-September 2015, supported by Deutsche Welle Akademie and financed by German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development”.
