The mass media organizations are worried about the service guard of Balti town hall, which on Monday, on March 28, had forbidden the Publika TV team to get audience from the vicemayor Lilia Sava, as it had got such indications. We specify that on March 21, Renato Usatii, the Mayor of Balti, declared to the Publika TVchannel that he would not allow those reporters to take part at the City Council’s public meetings, because he dislikes them as they are concerning the city’s matters.
We are reminding that through such actions are broken both the law on mass media and the law on local public administration, which stipulates in the Article 17 “Sessions Transparency” that the local council sessions are public and any interested person might assist them. The same article stipulates that the free access obstruction on local council sessions or the hiding information from the public interest are sanctioned. We point out that according to the Article 1801 on penal code of the Republic of Moldova, intentional obstructions on mass media activity are punished by criminal law.
We require the police inspectorate of Balti City, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Prosecutor’s office of Balti to investigate the case on information access obstruction by the Balti town hall and to inform about the results of the investigation.
At the same time, we attention to all the reporters not to promote such kind of conflict situations and not to lead to handling procedures, when they are concerned about.
