World Press Photo Exhibition 2018 Comes Back to Chisinau on 21 November

World Press Photo Exhibition 2018, the world’s most important photo contest, comes back to Chisinau for the second consecutive year. The event is organised by the Independent Journalism Center and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands.

The National Museum of History of Moldova is to host the exhibition between 21 November and 12 December 2018.

The annual photo contest awards photographers from all over the world for the best pictures that contributed to development of the visual journalism during the last year. Professional photographers, photojournalists and documentary photographers participate in this contest.

‘This is the second edition of this prestigious international exhibition which supports the freedom of expression and shows us the reality from different parts of the world through images. And this year, the images captured by professional photographers who participated in the contest reveal unusual, even shocking realities that deserve to reach as many people as possible’, says Nadine Gogu, Head of the Independent Journalism Center.

We invite all those interested to find out the life stories behind 137 photographs at the National Museum of History, starting from 22 November 2018.

  • Daily schedule: Open – 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Closed – on Friday.

This year, the 61st edition of the contest gathered about 5,000 photographers from 125 countries who sent over 73,000 pictures. The jury awarded 45 photographers from 25 countries: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Iran, Italy, Pakistan, Philippines, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Syria, New Zealand, Turkey, Great Britain and USA.

The annual international World Press Photo exhibition travels all over the world. It is installed in about 100 showrooms in over 45 countries and is visited by about 4.5 million people each edition. Before coming to Chisinau, the exhibition was organised in Amsterdam, Milan, Tokyo, Rome, Seville, Barcelona, Hamburg, Zurich, Dortmund, Berlin, Auckland, Ottawa, Santiago, Edinburgh, Venice, Bucharest, Timisoara, Eindhoven, Budapest, Copenhagen, Toronto, Madrid, Singapore, Islamabad, etc.

World Press Photo’s first edition took place in 1955, when a group of Dutch photographers organised a contest to expose their work to a global audience. Since then the contest has grown into the world’s most prestigious photography and visual journalism competition.
