The fans of photographic art had the rare opportunity to contemplate the photographic creations of the best masters of this genre at the World Press Photo Exhibition 2018, inaugurated for the second time in Chisinau. The event, organized by the ‘World Press Photo’ Foundation from the Netherlands, in partnership with the Independent Journalism Center, was hosted by the National Museum of History of Moldova during 21 November – 12 December and gathered over 2,000 visitors.

The exhibition was launched on 21 November, in the presence of a number of representatives of the diplomatic corps in Chisinau, journalists, photographers, and students.

This year, the 61st edition of the contest gathered about 5,000 photographers from 125 countries who sent over 73,000 pictures. The jury awarded 45 photographers from 25 countries.

As many as 137 photos declared winners in the 7 categories announced in the contest: Current Issues, Environment, News, Long-Term Projects, Nature, People, Sport and Spot News – were brought to Chisinau. The photos evoked a number of major problems the mankind faces, such as waste, terrorist attacks, environmental protection or poaching. Having managed to capture realities, emotions and characters from different parts of the Planet, the images had a strong emotional impact on the visitors from Moldova.

The exhibition was an opportunity for the students to develop their practical skills. The students from the School of Foreign Languages (Moldova State University) had a concrete task at one of the lessons to describe in English the photo that impressed them most. Their colleagues from the School of Journalism and Communication Sciences had an even more complicated task – they gathered information, views and impressions in order to produce a number of radio and TV reports about the second edition of the World Press Photo in Chisinau.
The event drew media’s attention – the journalists made a number of news reports both at the launching event and during the three weeks of the exhibition in Chisinau.

The exhibition is traveling all over the world and was installed in about 100 showrooms in over 45 countries. The number of visitors reaches up to 4.5 million people per edition.
